Punching in on Firecamp with the longed-for followup to his 2021-issued debut album, 'No Regerts', multi-faceted French artist Eugène Blove (ex band-member of Post / None) graces us with his new full-length, 'As If' - a norm-bending seven-piece movement, connecting the dots between brooding abstraction, electronic aggression and wistful Neo-folk in the most captivating way. Thrashing all protocols to explore the fragmented whereabouts of modern (dark-)pop and dysfunctional electronics, Blove beckons us onto a path of cathartic abandon and deep inward gaze. An arresting mix of anti-social experimentation ("Ne Crie Pas"), Coil-ish cacophony ("Fake It Until You Make It", "We Understand"), heart-rending honky-tonk piano ballads ("So Dry", "MFS"), autotuned chamber music baroque ("Glue"), topped off by a haunting final drift ("Solitudine") that grinds and sieves all of the above through an eight minute-shy litany of fevered guitar riffs and vocal lamento. Blove's new LP is neither assertive or easy to delineate, but rather a riddle in sound swallowing you down its bleeding, static-filled mouth completely. Grace and terror laced into one.
